We love ‘mood’ lighting at Pudding HQ. It is almost unheard of for someone to switch the ‘big light’ on in our house. In fact we haven’t bothered to replace the bulb in the living room since it went nearly 2 years ago! Imagine then my delight when Mathmos offered us the chance to review their new Neo lava lamp.
What I particularly like about Mathmos is that they are a British company with their manufacturing in Britain. What I didn’t know was that Mathmos were the original manufacturers of lava lamps and that the company was founded by the inventor Edward Craven Walker in 1963.
The lava lamp is a 20th Century design icon – think Austin Powers! But what Mathmos have done for the Neo has brought the lava lamp right back to the centre of contemporary design. I was so impressed when I took the lamp out of the packaging, it felt heavy, well made and beautifully designed. 60’s styling with sleek modern manufacturing.
The new Neo design comes with a choice of base metals as well as a choice in the colour of the lava lamp itself. I went with a pink/purple one on a chrome base. For no other reason than I wanted to claim this beautiful lamp as mine. I figured in these colours the boys would leave it alone. Of course I hadn’t counted on the fact that lava lamps are amazing and I soon found Pie standing in front of it utterly transfixed.
When the Neo lamp first arrived I had to fit the base together with the ‘lava’. It was very straightforward and took me less than 5 minutes. I then plugged in the lamp and had to wait for the lava to warm up. The instruction manual says it takes between 1-3 hours dependent on how hot the room is. I would say it took about 2 hours for the lamp to really get into the groove. But I think you will agree it was worth the wait.
